Call for Workshops and Panels

Welcome to the 2015 Applied Sciences and Arts Symposium Research Abstract (ASA) and Session Proposal Submission Site!

This interdisciplinary Applied Sciences and Arts (ASA) symposium is a collaborative effort in conjunction with Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) College of Applied Sciences and Arts, SIUC Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (CURCA), and the Journal of Applied Sciences and Arts (JASA), which supports a liberal arts-based professional education through experiential learning to empower graduates to be exemplary citizens and leaders in today and tomorrow’s global society.

The ASA symposium seeks scholarly contributions to inform the practical application of the Sciences and Arts in solving complex societal problems in the areas listed below and more. We make the distinction between basic research and applied research by following the use-driven research paradigm advanced by Donald Stokes in “Pasteur’s Quadrant: Basic Science and Technological Innovation:” a model of research done carefully, i.e., good science, but motivated by specific practical needs, hence referred to as need-driven or use-driven.

We invite participants and presenters to share their research, practices, and innovations that foster interdisciplinary and multidimensional applications of knowledge and integrative sharing through common themes, mediums, and discourses. We encourage submissions from professional practitioners, industry leaders, educators, researchers, designers, and graduate students. We hope you will join us at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, USA to experience various multi-disciplinary interactions associated within the Applied Sciences and Arts.

The Applied Sciences and Arts symposium coordinators invite application-driven research and creative outcomes in the subject areas, related but not limited to:

Authors or organizations interested in submitting a paper or presenting a workshop are invited to submit an abstract of no more than 350 words outlining their subject and intended role in a workshop or session; or the aims, contents and conclusions of their paper or presentation.

  1. Proposals for key focus sessions and/or workshops may be submitted electronically before September, 15, 2015 with the intent of soliciting distinct research presenters. Such proposals should include three or four paper proposals on a given theme. A session might be structured around an interdisciplinary nexus, a distinct problem area, or a particular field or approach. Session proposals must include a statement that all of the proposed speakers have agreed to participate, and contact information for all proposed speakers. Industry sponsorship and focus on professional continuing education are highly recommended in these focus areas.
  2. Proposals for research presentations and papers are then invited, pending subject areas. The proposal should include a brief working title and an abstract (of no more than 350 words) and submitted electronically before October, 22, 2015, indicating whether full paper submission is intended. The abstract should be written in English, the language of the abstract indicating the language of the proposed full paper. Full papers will be expected by (Date TBA) and reviewed for inclusion in the online published symposium proceedings; however authors are also encouraged to subject paper to additional review for upgrade and inclusion to the Journal of Applied Sciences and Arts (JASA), should author indicate interest.

All proposals will be selected on the basis of their clarity, quality, and originality, as well as their engagement with the symposium theme and their fit with other papers being presented. All proposals will be subject to blind, peer-review, wherein final selection will be made by a symposium coordinating committee. Presenters whose proposals are accepted will be expected to meet their own travel and accommodation costs.
